Checking in…

by Rebecca on January 18, 2013

Time to be honest with myself — and the world, since I posted my goals on this here public blog. Last year I made a goal to run 300 miles. I felt that an overall goal to strive for throughout the year would be better than a daily or weekly running goal. I didn’t make it to 300, but I did run 212 miles in 2012! Not bad for a previous non-runner. There were weeks where I didn’t lift a running leg, and weeks where I ran every day. I wouldn’t call it a total success, but I can now hop on the treadmill at any time of the day and run for two miles straight without stopping. To me, that’s success — even if it isn’t total.

My 30th birthday is fast approaching. Oh my gosh — it’s just a little more than six weeks away. Gag.

I haven’t completed even half of my 30 Awkward and Uncomfortable Things to do Before Turning 30 list, but I’ve done a sufficient amount of uncomfortable things that I feel successful at stepping out of my comfort zone.

  1. Try sushi — Tried it.
  2. Go to a football game — Didn’t happen. Maybe I’ll watch a portion of the Super Bowl for the first time in my 30 years.
  3. Have a conversation in Spanish with a native Spanish speaker — I asked a Spanish man who was asking for money to tell me where the money would go. I used about three Spanish words and he responded with about three English words, and a lot of gesturing. Does this count? *Palm to face* I still have six weeks!
  4. Learn how to do a cartwheel, for goodness’ sake — Haven’t even tried! I guess that’s what we’re doing for Family Night on Monday.
  5. Learn how to do a handstand — See above.
  6. Learn how to yo-yo — and “show off” my new talent to somebody (REALLY not looking forward to this) — NEXT Family Night.
  7. Learn how to rap — I made up a rap about chicken pot pie! I even performed it for my family. This counts, right?
  8. Take a ballet class, and participate in the recital — Right after I made this list, my husband and I both got callings in our church that take each of us out of the home at least one night of the week. Time was just never available for this goal, but it’s definitely a bucket-list goal.
  9. Take some sort of martial arts class — Same as above.
  10. Invent a recipe from my own head every month — I invented one or two. Good enough.
  11. Run a 5K Did it!
  12. Put on a magic show  – Next NEXT Family Night!
  13. Learn to play the guitar  – I can play “Michael Row the Boat Ashore.” Still time to learn a better song.
  14. Learn how to improvise songs on the piano — Gasp! This never happened, and I really wanted to do it. Maybe I’ll make this a goal for the year.
  15. Ski — This may happen.
  16. Eat seafood — Done!
  17. Learn how to cut my husband’s hair — Did not happen. Maybe I’ll still try.
  18. Learn how to do my daughter’s hair – Done! I can do no less than five hairstyles. Maybe even 10. Shazam!
  19. Have real conversations with cashiers — I’ve done this quite well, and I think I’m a nicer person for it.
  20. Make eye contact with strangers and smile — Yep, I’ve done a decent job with this.
  21. Write a book — I’ve written about 10 chapters. This year will be about editing and publishing.
  22. Figure out how to get published in a magazine — and then do it — Not done. But I did submit an idea to Parent’s Magazine about birthday pictures that they printed. Does that count?
  23. Shoot a gun — Haven’t done this yet, but it’s still on my bucket list
  24. Shoot a bow and arrow — I have the Groupon — we’ll be doing this for a date night soon!
  25. Wear red lipstick — I’ll get around to it.
  26. Give a Book of Mormon to somebody — Still haven’t succeeded at this. Does anybody want one?
  27. Make a video of myself doing something and post it somewhere where people will see — Yeah, I don’t think this one’s gonna happen. Blech.
  28. Fix something on my car — It’s too cold to be workin’ on cars! Ain’t nobody got warm enough hands for that! Maybe I’ll try in the summer.
  29. Get Lasik surgery — I knew when I made this list that this almost certainly would not be happening, but it was still good for me to think about it. Since anything about eyes makes me want to vomit, this won’t be happening for a very, very, very long time. Thinking about it for a year was not enough time. Baby steps. Baby steps.
  30. ???? — I never did think of a 30th item, and it’s just as well, seeing as I couldn’t even complete the 29 I had all year!

You have really done a lot of ‘Out of the Box’ things. You have done things I wouldn’t even try or think about doing. I am proud of you whether you met all of your goals or not. You are more well rounded, more enlightened and more experienced for it. You are awesome. Was that one of your goals? If so, you made that. Good job Miss Awesome.

I think you are amazing for making a list. I am turning 30 in June and I have not made any bucket lists!

Both of your nieces have completed your numbers 23 and 24! Move to Idaho and you could have those activities every weekend!:) P.S. I can’t wait to hear your improvised songs on the piano!
