When I realized I had been given an extra year (kind of like Leap Day!), I decided I want to make this year count. My husband told me I should learn a new talent that is completely not me: like yo-yo-ing.
And so a list was born.
With the help of my husband and sister in law, I came up with 30 Awkward and Uncomfortable Things to Do Before Turning 30. This is not a bucket list. This is a list of things that will force me out of my comfort zone. I’ve lived nearly three decades, and I would say I’m fairly set in my ways. I eat a peanut butter sandwich for lunch every single day, for crying out loud.
With any luck, completing this list will help me to be more willing to try new things. I expect pain, but we don’t grow without pain, right?
And now, for my list that really isn’t all that exciting, but is very out of my tiny, little comfort zone. I’m short one item. A friend suggested singing at church, but I really can’t put people through that misery. Any other suggestions?
- Try sushi
- Go to a football game
- Have a conversation in Spanish with a native Spanish speaker
- Learn how to do a cartwheel, for goodness’ sake
- Learn how to do a handstand
- Learn how to yo-yo — and “show off” my new talent to somebody (REALLY not looking forward to this)
- Learn how to rap — and perform (if you are my friend, family or neighbor, start working on your excuse to get out of seeing that train wreck)
- Take a ballet class, and participate in the recital
- Take some sort of martial arts class
- Invent a recipe from my own head every month
- Run a 5K
- Put on a magic show (Oh my gosh. This was another of my husband’s ideas — why did I agree to this one?)
- Learn to play the guitar (this really isn’t out of my comfort zone, but I’m keeping it on the list)
- Learn how to improvise songs on the piano
- Ski
- Eat seafood
- Learn how to cut my husband’s hair
- Learn how to do my daughter’s hair
- Have real conversations with cashiers
- Make eye contact with strangers and smile
- Write a book
- Figure out how to get published in a magazine — and then do it
- Shoot a gun
- Shoot a bow and arrow
- Wear red lipstick
- Give a Book of Mormon to somebody
- Make a video of myself doing something and post it somewhere where people will see
- Fix something on my car
- Get Lasik surgery
- ????

Okay, I will do most of these with you. Keep me on speed dial!
I LOVE it!!! This is a fantastic list and I can’t wait to read your posts as you cross them off. You’ve inspired me to make a list of my own…I was just thinking the other day that 30 isn’t that far off for me either! Just wondering – you’ve never had seafood?? And when it comes time to put on that magic show, I have some tips for you!
I still think you should do that one thing (the post). Hey what about….writing something else that would put you out of your comfort zone? Or…is crafting/sewing hard for you? Planting a weird vegetable/fruit that needs good nuturing? Ummm maybe something organizational that would be hard for you? Something to do with photography? Hmmm something like fix a clock all on your own? Something to do with food storage/canning/etc.?
ok, next week Im coming up and we are eating sushi, learning a cartwheel and hand stand, and doing lydias hair a million times
ok?
Next time we come to Utah you can come shoot guns with the Newman clan
Some of those happen to be on my bucket list! I would love to take a ballet class with you-I’ve always wanted to do that.
learn to knit. It’s very comforting
This is my kind of list. I have never tried sushi, and I don’t want to…or sea food for that matter. Didn’t we have a moment at dinner when I was pregnant with Devin?? I think it was the Grape Bistro or something…sea food grosses me out. Let me know how that goes.
This list is awesome! It makes me smile. You’re going to have a great, if somewhat awkward time doing all this stuff.
I highly recommend the LASIC by the way. Best 10-15 minutes of surgery you’ll ever have. I got my eyes done six years ago and I still love it.
Just saw today’s groupon for SLC and it is half off Lasik. Go to http://www.babesinhairland.com for hair ideas for your cute little girls. They have simple to elaborate hairstyles. Have fun!
Better hurry with those cartwheels and handstands. Nature has a way of developing a heavier gravitational pull as we age. And, how are you going to get that all done before you turn 30? The only way is to stay 29 as long as your Grandpa has. Good luck.
