Germany vs. USA

by Rebecca on August 17, 2010

Things that are different between Germany and America, according to my uber wonderful foreign exchange student.

  • Our refrigerator (which is bottom of the  line) is HUGE!  HUGE, according to German standards.  Let me tell you something: Our fridge doesn’t even compare with my mom’s or my sister’s or anybody’s refrigerator I’ve seen around here because it’s tiny, according to American standards.
  • Our stove and oven (also bottom of the line) is also HUGE!  Again, please note: it is tiny, according to American standards.
  • Her entire German school could fit comfortably, with wiggle room, in her new American high school PARKING LOT.
  • Wal Mart (yes, I’m ashamed I took her there during her first American week, but we needed diapers!  And a bicycle tire repair kit.  Plus, she was happy to go because Wal Mart is famous.) is HUGE.
  • Hardly anybody rides bikes in America.
  • Coke is too sweet.
  • Fanta tastes different.
  • American food portions are enormous.

Are you surprised?

What a memorable adventure you’re going to have! We had exchange students from France and it was fun to see their take on America. Things they loved, other things confused them.
Don’t be ashamed of taking her to WalMart. She needs to experience the good AND the bad!
Have fun!

You know Sprite tastes weird out there!

They also eat french fries with little forks.

Will you please ask her if she loves The Hoff?

Steph August 17, 2010 at 6:33 pm

Don’t traumatize the poor girl by asking her what Kristina said.

I hope you guys have a great time. Have her drink root beer. My cousins from France hated it. Said it tasted like cough syrup.

They don’t call us the most obese country for nothin’ :)

Not at all, sounds like England to me, my English family were visiting and couldn’t believe how HUGE the MacDonald’s portions were over here, i.e. a medium size meal would be a supersize in England, and everything here is sugared up. The washing machines are a lot bigger too, if we ever moved back there I’d be sure to try and get an American sized one shipped over though!

I’m so excited to learn more from my “new foreign exchange niece”…have you told her she has a “favorite aunt jenny” yet? :) Seriously – what a great experience you have taken on…I want to know more! Yes, we Americans are spoiled & self-endulgent compared to European standards…we tend to want more than we really need – I’m guilty.

But what about the mountains? Maybe I’m a geological idiot, but were the Rockies HUGE to her as well?? :) What a fun experience I’m sure you all are having!

That sounds like Italy vs. USA…or pretty much all of Europe vs. USA. Size definitely matters!! My husband still gets shocked every time we go to the States. That’s such an awesome experience, both for your German daughter and for you. It will be a fantastic year!

LOL…. It must be fun coming this way. Not so fun going that way and using small appliances. Our fridge in England was so small! Our washing maching was tiny and I felt like I was doing laundry everyday!
