How to be American

by Rebecca on August 5, 2010

We are getting so excited because our adorable foreign exchange student will be here in less than 2 weeks!

Now I need your help.  Where should we take her on her first day here?  If you were 16 and moving from Germany to America for a year, what would you be excited to see right away?   And where would you like to eat?

Yes, she’ll be tired that day, but she’s 16 for crying out loud.  She’s got energy.  Give me some fun suggestions!  They don’t have to be Utah specific.  Any idea will help me compile a fun list so she can choose activities.

How does one properly introduce a European teenager to America?

Oh, fun! My coworker is German, and she has a German teenage exchange student living with them.

Some ideas:
Brighton because the canyons are beautiful and you can walk around the little lake pretty easily (children included).
Ruth’s Diner because, again, the canyons are beautiful and they have live music on Thursday nights. Plus it’s a Utah classic!
The zoo and This Is the Place park
In-N-Out and/or Five Guys for good burgers
Frogurt for make-your-own frozen yogurt
A water park like Seven Peaks or Cowabunga bay
A nice, easy hike (Bell’s Canyon down here is a good one!)

I believe YOU and she must travel to Washington DC. I know a great place you can stay …

I have to agree with In-N-Out….so happy there are some in Utah now!! Frozen yogurt, yes, and a drive through the most spectacular but nearest canyon you can find.

How about Park City, really anyplace outside of the city. The canyons area a great idea. Maybe you should find out what she wants to do.
Do you have a “Pizza My Heart”?

I would say either to see the Statue of Liberty or to eat a cupcake.

Cupcakes might be the easier choice.

Hi. I don’t normally go to other people’s blogs but my eye flashed on one of my good friend’s screen (Jolena) your blog as a post and the title “How to Be American”. I was interested in this as I am living overseas now. When I read you are having a German exchange student I thought of the German exchange students my sister had. Generally speaking, they love the outdoors so that’s generally a good bet. And the idea of pizza is a good one.

Also…it may be a good idea to review guidelines on house rules and expectations early on. It is the norm for German teenagers to be sexually active and smoking. That may not be her ideas but it is generally a good idea to review guidelines within the first week. Enjoy! My sister has had GREAT experiences with her German exchange students as well as NOT SO GOOD ones.
