Dancing in the Rain

by Rebecca on July 27, 2010

I’m offline this week, but I’m re-posting some of my old favorites.  This was originally posted June 2, 2009, when my daughter was about 18 months old.

Dancing in a summer rainstorm is the best thing in the world.  Spreading my arms wide and feeling the warm rain on my face, bare arms, and legs is a delicious feeling.  Splashing through the sudden puddles and acting like a child is a moment to relish.  My husband and I shared one of our first kisses as we danced in a summer rain storm.  *sigh*

Dancing in a summer rain storm with my daughter is equally as fun, if not more so.  As the rain storm slowly builds momentum, I watch my daughter’s gradual awareness of the change in atmosphere.  She stops when she hears the big rain drops pelting the cars and fences a few yards away.  She points and makes excited faces but continues on with her chosen activity.

Then, the first rain drop hits her head.  She reaches up with her tiny arm to touch the wet spot, a surprised expression on her face.  She notices the giant rain drops on the ground.  She excitedly touches each one, mumbling and explaining, until they are falling too fast, and the whole ground is covered in water.  She squeals with delight and her body begins to move and dance.

She uses her limited vocabulary to try to explain what’s going on.  “Hot???” she says while she touches her head.  “Not hot.  Wet,” I correct.  “Water???” she asks, pointing to a puddle.  “Yes,” I answer.  “Nose????” She touches her nose in reference to the song I taught her about rain falling on our noses.

Can you be in love with an experience?  Because I’m in love with this one!
