A Clenched Mouth a Day Keeps the Dentist Away

by Rebecca on July 22, 2010

Lydia had her first dentist appointment today.  It wasn’t a real appointment; just a few minutes tacked on to the end of my own cleaning (no cavities, thankyouverymuch).

All week, we’ve been prepping her for this appointment.  We explained that the  dentist would look at her teeth and maybe use a tool to clean them a little bit.  We would say, “When the dentist says, ‘Show me your teeth,’ what do you do?”  She would happily and obediently open her mouth wide with a smile.

While she sat with me in the chair, I repeated the question and she repeated the same perfect response.

While she watched me get my own teeth cleaned, she begged, “After this, we do my teeth?”  I just knew she was going to impress the socks off the dentist with her amazing 2 1/2 year old capabilities.

The dentist then turned his attention to her.  “Ok, let’s see those teeth,” he said.

Nothing.

“Can you open wide?”

Nothing again.  Only this time, with firm set jaws.

“Can I count your teeth?  Won’t that be fun?”

You get the idea.

She did NOT impress the socks off the dentist as he bravely jammed his finger inside her clenched mouth so he could at least get a feel of how her teeth are developing.

When we walked out of the office, she immediately turned to me and with confusion said, “But he didn’t brush my teeth.  Why?”

Cute story. Gotta love their train of thought (and if you could explain to me just how that works, I’d appreciate it!).

That’s what happens to me at the dentist. I hate it. I only go if I absolutely have to.
