Historic Walking Tour of Monterey, California

by Rebecca on April 19, 2010

Two weeks ago today, we were in lovely Monterey, California celebrating our fifth anniversary.  Have you ever been to that beautiful city?

We had no set plans for this trip, other than to play on the beach (of course). Having so much free time and no specific place to be was a first for us.  I am not very organized in my daily life, but when we go on vacation, I have our itinerary planned down to the minute.

We found there are advantages to both types of vacation, and one of the greatest advantages to a plan-free trip is what you can discover when you have nothing else to do.

After eating lunch somewhere in downtown Monterey, we took a little walk around the shopping district.  We started to notice symbols on the ground placed every few feet or so.

Since we had nothing else to do, we followed them and were taken to different historical houses and buildings throughout Monterey.  We wandered around the gardens and home of one of the first families in Monterey.

We explored the gardens of an old hotel.

Unfortunately, we couldn’t explore the hotel itself.

We trespassed into some cool courtyards.

We toured an old jail, saw where the constitution of California was drafted, and saw a redwood tree grown from a seed that has been to the moon and back.

And with all that free time exploring going on, we got very, very silly with each other.  This is just one evidence of that.  Fortunately, the camera was away during other silly episodes.

I think I was adjusting my shirt, but it looks like I just wet my pants or something.

Do you plan your vacations or just go with the flow?
