Accomplishing My Goal

by Rebecca on February 24, 2010

Have I told you lately that I’m busy?  Well, I’m adding one more daunting challenge to my list of impossible things to accomplish.

Every year, my piano students have a fancy recital at the end of the school year.  They dress up and play their very best and most impressive sounding pieces.  They always do amazing and we all walk away feeling uplifted and inspired to keep plugging through the drudgeries of practice.

I also learn a new piece each year for this recital.  I should have chosen a piece months ago because my limited practice time makes for a many-month journey in order to perfect my piece.

Well, in true Rebecca Fashion, I’m choosing my piece only 3 months before the recital.  Oy.

When I youtubed Brahm’s Rhapsody Op. 79, No. 2, I found several performances by professionals as well as some by tweens and teens.  I wish I hadn’t found those blasted tween performances, because now if I don’t accomplish my goal, I will have to live with the fact that an 11 year old can do it better than me.

I could have chosen a simple piece or just re-learned a piece from my past when I had ample practice time, but I really want to do this one. I know I’m making it hard on myself, but that’s what I’m good at. Making things difficult.

Can I do it?  Maybe if I get some cool shoes and style my hair like this guy, the audience won’t notice if I completely foul up the piece?

Wish me luck.  And if you want to organize my house so that I have time to practice, I’ll let you.

You can do it! I can’t even remember the last time I’ve been able to sit down at my piano to play! Good for you for keeping up! :)

Oh, wow! I didn’t know you teach piano! That’s awesome! I used to teach piano, too. However, you are freaking amazing (& I was not… decent but not amazing) and I’m sure you’ll do a FABULOUS job! And if you want us to put your performance on youtube, don’t hesitate to ask. ;)

Wow! That is so amazing that people can play like that. I had Nicole watch the clip with me. I don’t know if she’s ever seen anyone play a piece like. You can do it, I know you can. You are so talented and what an example you are of someone who keeps striving to develop their talent!!!

You can do anything you want. You have proved that over and over again. Good luck. Loose the hair.
