Tips For a Happy Marriage

by Rebecca on February 23, 2010

It’s February 23, 9 days after Valentine’s Day.  How are your Valentine’s Resolutions coming?

What?  You’ve never heard of Valentine’s Resolutions?  Me neither.  It’s something I came up with after spending a blissful day with my sweetheart followed by an evening of misery in which we proceeded to push each other’s buttons to our heart’s content.

Do you remember that old song-

“Hi, My name is Joe.
I got a wife and three kids and I work in a button factory.
One day, my boss came up to me and said,
‘Hi there Joe, are you busy?’
I said, ‘No.’
‘Then push this button with your right hand.’”

And it goes on to left hand, right foot, and on and on. (I tried to find a video of the song on youtube, but they were all rather strange- you can go see for yourself if you’d like.)

Anyway, here is my version:

Hi.  My name is Rebecca.
I have a husband and one kid
And I work as a stay at home mom/journalist/piano teacher.
One day, my husband came up to me and said,
“Hi there, Becca, are you busy?”
I said, “Heck yes.  Why are you even asking me that?”
and proceeded to push every button he has with my right hand, left hand, right foot, and left foot until he was furious with me and I with him.

Button pushing in marriage is oh-so-easy, but never good.  NEVER.  So we resolved on Valentine’s Day to STOP pushing buttons.

Also to stop ALLOWING our buttons to be pushed.

It’s been a tricky but pretty happy 9 days.

what a great idea! I love it! Reminds me of making spiritual goals at general conference time. It just makes more sense than January to me.

I love this idea, it reminds me of the quote from President Hinckley: “If you will make your first concern the comfort, the well-being, and the happiness of your companion, sublimating any personal concern to that loftier goal, you will be happy, and your marriage will go on throughout eternity.”

Oh, I know how that goes. You just have a lovely day and then WAM one of you pulls something out of the ole gunny sack and drags up something that needs to be pushed back in that gunny sack. It takes effort as sad as that is to keep a marriage happy. Keep working on it. YOu guys really have something. Forgive and forget.
