I’m Dreaming of a Green Christmas…Foiled Again
by Rebecca on October 27, 2009
The dreaded day has arrived. The first snowfall. (BEFORE Halloween, mind you. So rude.)
I haven’t always hated snow. There was a day (or two) where I was really excited about the treacherous stuff.
My first Utah snowfall was glorious. Having moved from California to Utah as a college freshman, I was eagerly anticipating living in the snow. My roommate was from South Carolina and was equally excited. Both snow virgins, we gleefully danced around throwing snowballs and making snow angels. We took oodles of pictures on her digital camera to send back to the folks in the warm states.
And that was the first day.
I soon realized snow is awful awful stuff. Brigham Young University is a huge campus, and I always seemed to live a mile from my first morning class. Walking uphill in the snow (not both ways, though. Just one way) is tough stuff. Especially when the snow is blowing sideways into your face and your California feet are slipping all over the sidewalk.
When I finally got a car, I thought my snow problems would be over since I would no longer show up to class with snow and salt up to my knees. But oh no! Those problems had only just begun.
There’s a very surreal feeling to sitting in the driver’s seat and helplessly sliding completely out of control. It’s like you’re watching a movie and seeing it happen to a paid actor in a controlled environment. Only you’re not. You’re the one frantically trying to correct the steering wheel which stubbornly refuses to respond to your urgent commands.
And then, if you avoid accident, you find a parking spot, walk to class, and still end up with snow and salt up to your knees from your short walk through the snow.
I’m trying to have a better attitude about snow, so at the suggestion of my mother, I started a TOP TEN list. But so far, all my reasons to like snow are sarcastic.
TOP TEN REASONS TO LIKE SNOW
1. You get out of going to unpleasant social engagements since the blizzard outside is a death trap for you and your car.
2. You have get to spend lots of money on water proof uber traction boots and huge parkas.
3. Since it’s too cold to go outside, you remain trapped a prisoner in your own home. You get tired of looking at messes and your house becomes very clean. Or not. Driven by unmotivating “winter blues,” you may, instead, develop the lesser known “sixth” sense- being able to effectively ignore what’s staring you straight in the face.
4. When you do occasionally get a nice sunny day, you become happier and giddier than a 5 year old on Christmas morning. Neighbors avoid you and your strange shouts of joy.
5. And that’s as far as I can get without crying. I don’t even want to think about snow anymore.
Please help me! What’s your TOP REASON FOR LOVING THE SNOW?

i hate it too, but nothing it prettier then snow on all the trees, and white everywhere for christmas! Snow isn’t bad as long as it is melted within a day
You just gave me the top ten reasons for never moving back to Utah. I cannot think of one good thing about snow. Well, here is one. When you are a kid, you love to play in it and then come home to a nice cup of hot chocolate. You have a kid who will someday love to play in it and have some fun. There, that’s it.
I hear ya sister! I live north of the border, but we haven’t had any of the white curse yet. I’m mentally preparing myself though. Because I too hate it. So here’s my addition to your list . . .
I love snow because . . . all those those dripping wet boots, hats & mitts at the front door allow me to keep my front hall cleaner by having to mop up much more often.
Just dropping by from SITS. And I love your header by the way.
Sledding with your kids (or your friends kids, or your sisters kids) is so much fun! As is making snowmen!
Scarves! You can’t wear those in the summer. Wool pea coats. They’re so cute! And you’ve got to get into winter activities! Sledding, snow tubing, snow shoeing (It’s just walking with things on your feet that keep you from falling. What’s better?). Oh, and hot chocolate just tastes so much better when you’re curled up in a blanket looking at it from the warmth of your home.
1. The world is so quiet with a snowfall. Very peaceful
2. So breathtaking beautiful
3. Fun to play in
4. Lovely at night with the lights reflecting off it.
5. Softens the world
6. Provides water in the summer
7. Skiing
8. Crunch of your footsteps walking in a soft snow fall
9. Cleans out the polluted air
10. Just plain gorgeous.
NEED I GO ON? Do you hate candy because you have to brush your teeth or you will get a cavitity? So snow requires some work. ENJOY
I loved snow so much before I had kids.
Now I only like it.
When you break your leg while skiing in the snow, there’s something cold to pack around it until you can get to the hospital. Snow tires are very fashionable on your car.
Sliding uncontrollably on the street is better and cheaper than a ride in an amusement park.
You get good exercise shoveling the white stuff off your driveway and sidewalks.
I really don’t mind the snow as long as I have warm clothes, gloves and boots. I think it’s beautiful but I’m very happy for the change of seasons. What is it? Opposition in all things? Because of the snow, I really look forward to Spring.
Awww… Missing the snow sooooo bad that it makes me so sad to see all these people saying they hate the snow. Course my tune might change when I am back in it… who knows. lol
I had to think really hard about this. And dig deep into the dark corners of my soul. And all I could come up with was snowmen.
Having grown up in Utah, snow is no stranger to me. But I really only like it in December. I’d prefer not to see it before then. And once New Year’s has passed, I’m done with the stuff. I only want to use it for the holiday aura, then kick it out. This cold weather is killing me.
The only time I’ve ever been to Utah (to visit you, my dear) it was snowing. It was the coldest I’ve ever been in my entire life, seriously…not since or before then can I remember being so cold. But…it was also the most beautiful place ever. Everything was so clean and natural looking, the mountain tops were white and the Salt Lake Temple looked gorgeous. Oh my goodness, that Temple was sooo amazingly gorgeous in the snow.
