Artist of the Week- Henri Matisse

by Rebecca on January 15, 2009

This is NOT an example of something I am dazzled by.  I have never liked this painting by Henri Mattise, but I wanted to get your opinions on it!

Matisse believed,

Color was not given to us in order that we should imitate Nature.  It was given to us so that we can express our own emotions.

I wonder just what emotion Matisse was trying to portray in this painting.  First, this painting was mostly green.  Then, Matisse changed it to mostly blue.  Finally, he changed it to the colors you see now.  The red is what bothers me the most about this painting.  That, and the pattern on the tablecloth and wall.

I just do not like it.  But what do you think?

Thanks for stopping by my blog! Yours is adorable! I love Matisse. Art history was one of my favorite classes in high school.

I will be back!

I love it! I really do, I love the red and trees outside and the woman…and everything really. I like bold bright colors.

I like the quote very much. It’s not art I would ever choose to buy. The ivy on the wall and tablecloth are too overpowering for the painting. And I am no expert on art, just my opinion.
