TJ at Illuminate Everyday gave a challenge last week to her readers to compile a list of five to ten books for their lifetime pursuit reading list. I’ve been going crazy trying to think of the books I would like included in my list. In no particular order, here is my list.
- The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald
- War and Peace by Leo Tolstoy
- Crime and Punishment by Fyodor Dostoevsky
- The Bible
- The Book of Mormon
- Les Miserables by Victor Hugo
- 1984 by George Orwell
- Farenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury
- Little Women by Louisa May Alcott
- Anna Karenina by Leo Tolstoy
- Atlas Shrugged by Ayn Rand
- The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn by Mark Twain
- Shakespeare’s complete works
- Anne of Green Gables by LM Montgomery
- To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee
- Gone With the Wind by Margaret Mitchell
- The Grapes of Wrath by John Steinbeck
- Lord of the Flies by William Golding
- Paradise Lost by John Milton
- Frankenstein by Mary Shelley
- The Scarlet Letter by Nathaniel Hawthorne
As you can see, I do not know how to break this list down to 10, so I think I am going to keep it as it is. I have read some of these books and would like to read them again and again. Others I have never read. If you have more suggestions, please do share! I would love to add to my list!

The Great Gatsby and Anne of Green Gables are in mine too. Little Women might be my fav book/movie of all time.
Great Books! Thanks for participating.
Which one are you going to read first?
There are so many worthy books to choose from….I know I will never run out of good books to read. I did a post awhile ago you might be interested in: http://etsyhighdesertdiva.blogspot.com/2008/08/read.html
Always curious to find out how people find my blog…if you visit again, let me know
I’ve never even heard of Atlas Shrugged. Now I need to go look it up!
How cool, so many great classics. I should make a list too. I think I would have the same trouble…where to start? And how to narrow it down? I think your list of 21 is great.
Wow – what a great list! Thanks – I’ll be sure to pass onto my English major friend too!
I would pass on Lord of the Flies and Crime and Punishment. Otherwise I have loved all your other choices that I have read and look forward to reading those I haven’t read.
I would add Barbara Kingsolvers, “Poisonwood Bible” and
Karen Hesse’s “Out of the Dust”. Don’t forget Dicken’s “A Tale of Two Cities” or just about anything from Alexandre Dumas.
